  • Outdoor Furniture Winter Care

As mentioned in our previous post, different types of materials need different kinds of care during the winter to protect them from damage. Rain and sand can all wreak havoc on your beloved patio furniture and you could lose money having to purchase new furniture.

To protect your furniture, follow these tips to keep them in tip-top shape:

    Wooden Furniture

For wooden furniture, polish and varnish with natural wood cleaning products. Choose products that are designed to clean wood safely and efficiently without stripping it of its natural beauty. There are many great wood-cleaning products available on the market today to help you preserve your wood furniture. Another reminder is to never cover wood furniture in rainy conditions. Wood can mildew when rain seeps in. Wood should be stored during the winter if at all possible.

    wooden outdoor furniture

    Aluminum Furniture

Aluminium furniture is the most durable and can resist most weather, including our premium aluminium dining sets . Still, it may be susceptible to rust or damage if left in the open during the Winter's harsh elements. It is perfectly acceptable to use a silicone spray or auto wax to further protect the surface of finished aluminium but it is not necessary. For maximum protection, cover it with a polyester or vinyl tarp and pin it down to avoid it flying off with high winds or storms. Aluminium dining sets can be left out if you choose but it's best to bring them in so they don't get soiled by birds or other elements.

    Natural Stone Outdoor Furniture

Natural stone outdoor sets are synonymous with luxury and quality, they are highly durable and need minimal care to maintain their beauty. The main problem in caring for natural stone furniture is the fact that you have to clean between the crevices in order to avoid damage. Over time, water and other runoff can seep into the cracks of stone furniture, causing irreparable damage. This is why it is so important to clean it regularly. Make sure you use cleaning materials that are not too harsh, so you can preserve the natural beauty of the stone.

    natural stone table

    Wicker Furniture

Wicker outdoor furniture is very susceptible to damage due to water, mildew, and gets dirty easily due to all of the cracks and crevices in the wicker. To protect your wicker outdoor furniture from the elements, clean it often (about once per month) to keep bugs and dirt out. Use wax to give it a nice coating that will preserve it from rain and other harsh elements. When it's time for winter, it's best to move your wicker furniture indoors and store it to keep it safe. If it is exposed to rain or humidity, the wicker material can split and break.

When considering how to protect your outdoor furniture, always use the materials and methods that are specifically made for that material. If you use the wrong chemicals on them it can damage them permanently. Just a little planning ahead will save your patio furniture from disaster when the winter weather hits.

  • How To Protect Outdoor Furniture For The Winter

Winter is upon us and it's time to start thinking about how you can protect your patio furniture from the threat of winter weather. Patio furniture is important to us here in Australia as it is a symbol of social gatherings on the Barbie (Q).
You need to keep your outdoor furniture in the best condition possible and preserve it from the winter elements. We all know just how unpredictable the Winter can be. One day it may be sunny and mild and the next day, it may be cold and blustery.

It's best to prepare for the worst so that you don't risk losing some of your most prized furniture to the weather. Some of the damages you could experience to your patio furniture are rain, sleet, sand, and harsh winter wind. All of these things can create havoc for your patio furniture. Here are a few tips you can utilise to protect outdoor furniture for the winter and keep it at its best:

    1. Keep it Clean

By doing monthly cleaning and maintenance on your patio furniture, you can save yourself a lot of trouble later on. It's hard to get out and clean in the elements, so make a habit of doing this on a monthly basis instead all year long. That way, you'll know it's always in the best condition, no matter what the weather is later. Make sure that you take care to use the proper cleaning materials and solutions on the right furniture. Some chemicals can be too harsh for certain materials and may damage it. Read the label instructions for advice or contact the manufacturer of your patio furniture if you are not sure, to avoid damage.

    clean outdoor furniture

    2. Cover it up.

When the wind blows in, bringing harsh sand and cold with it, you need to make sure your furniture is protected. Purchase a simple covering made of polyester or vinyl that can be strewn over the furniture. Then make sure you secure it with rocks or heavy items so that the winter wind doesn't blow it away or worse into a neighbour's yard. It's a good idea to store away the smaller items if you can, such as lawn or patio chairs and smaller tables, so you don't have to worry about the smaller pieces. They'll be secure and ready for your use again next spring.

Protect Outdoor Furniture For The Winter

    3. Maintenance Jobs

To keep your furniture in the best condition, you should also do regular maintenance as needed. Wood should be varnished on occasion to keep up the shiny appearance and good condition. For wicker, it may require waxing periodically to buff up the finish and also to protect it from the winter elements. Metal or plastic furniture may require occasional paint touch-ups to keep them in the best condition. For rust touch-ups after the winter season, you can use powder coating to make it look like new again.

    4. Think when shopping for new furniture.

To lower the amount of maintenance you will need to do for next winter, think about the kind of material that you are buying and the amount of work it will take to keep it up-to-par. This can save you a lot of trouble down the road.
With some routine cleaning and maintenance, as well as some minor touch-ups now and then, you can protect outdoor furniture for the winter and keep them in the best conditions. So when you plan those Spring and Summer BBQ's, you will have it ready for all of your social gatherings.

  • The Malibu outdoor lounge collection

Outdoor modular lounges are enjoying extraordinary popularity at the moment as we look to bring the comforts of the lounge room into the great outdoors. There are many options available these days in a variety of colours, sizes and most importantly quality. It is not always easy to tell the difference so we have put together this guide on what makes our premium Malibu collection so special.

    Untitled design (51)

    1. Sunbrella outdoor fabric

So what is Sunbrella? You can read about it in more detail here but essentially it is a high performance textile that is highly resistant to UV, mildew and stains. In practical terms it means it won't fade if left in direct sunlight and it is very easy to clean. In many cases a wet cloth will do but if you get a significant stain on it like a red wine spill you can clean it with a bleach mix. Yes bleach. That is because the colour is not dyed onto blank fabric as with so many others but the thread itself is coloured to the core.

    2. Clean without removing the cushion covers

Sure these cushion covers are removable but the beauty of the Sunbrella fabric is you can easily and effectively clean the cushion covers while they are still on. For instance bird droppings can easily be removed with just a little soapy water and a brush and in many case just a wet cloth will do the job.  However. should you want to remove them the cushions are sealed with a YKK zip for easy access.

    3. Solaris all-weather wicker

The material used to make the synthetic strands that are turned into a wicker lounge can look very similar and in a photo almost identical. In reality though they can be vastly different. In the Malibu, Royalle Outdoors use Solaris grade 5 wicker that has the maximum amount of UV stabilisation added to the synthetic mix. On top of that, this premium range has a an extra curved profile making it even stronger than a regular flat wicker.

Outdoor lounge buying tip: - If you are checking a wicker product out in store try sticking your fingers through the weave. You can soon feel the difference. Quality synthetic wickers won't easily part, this is a simple test to show if the quality is good.

    4. Fully welded non-rust aluminium frames

Underneath all that wicker is a frame, an essential element to the structure of the piece. There are a few points to note here. Firstly the fact that it is aluminium means that it will not rust and therefore degrade the structure and potentially staining your surface. It also means it is lightweight making the pieces fairly mobile allowing for easy cleaning  or changing around your seating design. Secondly, the fact the framing is welded means the integrity of the lounge will be maintained after years of use. A steel bolt-together frame would of course be cheaper but will not provide the benefits of welded aluminium.

Buying tip: Check with the outlet that the lounge is not "KD". This is industry speak for knock- down. It is a very efficient way of shipping and therefore cheaper but it means there are parts that have to be bolted together. Quality outdoor wicker furniture pieces will generally not be KD.

    5. Triple layer sandwhich foam cushions

We have researched a variety of cushion constructions over the years and in the Malibu setting we have achieved a beautiful balance between comfort and longevity. It is necessary to use a somewhat firm foam to ensure that it doesn't collapse in time. Our high quality medium density foam does indeed provide comfort and support but to further enhance that plush feeling this foam is sandwiched between soft layers of fibrefill. The result is a super comfy pillowtop cushion that will hold its form.

Quality cushions are not only essential in maintaining the comfort of the lounge but also the look of the lounge. Inferior cushions will flatten out and lose the filled-out look quite quickly.

Explore our most popular popular Malibu modular combinations in our online store here

    6. Tex-mesh base

Sunbrella is a highly water resistant fabric but if the cushions are left in the rain, moisture will eventually penetrate the fabric which is completely normal. To ensure that any water does drain out as quickly as possible every base cushion is finished with a layer of textaline on the underside. This is an all weather PVC mesh that allows water to freely drain through it and also helps the cushions to breath. Drying time is also accelerated so you can enjoy your lounge sooner after it has been wet.

    7. Tempered safety glass on the tables

Not only do the matching coloured glass tops on the accessory tables look great but they are also a much better performance option. Many tables will have a fully woven wicker top with clear glass sitting over it. The problem with this is that the clear glass works as a magnifier making the sun that much more damaging to the wicker sitting underneath it.

    8. Five year warranty at no extra cost

Sunbrella back up their fabric with a 5 year warranty and Royalle have matched that on the frame and Solaris wicker. That's FIVE years on the fabric, FIVE years on the frame and FIVE years on the wicker. That's actually three years more than what others call an "extended warranty" and even charge more for it. Five years at no extra cost.

    9. Versatility of modulars

These modular outdoor lounges are a great option when it comes to tailoring an outdoor lounge setting to your space. With a variety of individual seating options and accessory tables available there is no limit to the number of combinations you can put together. Here are just a few of the possibilities.

  • Sunbrella outdoor performance fabrics

We are passionate about building quality furniture and that starts with raw material selection. When it comes to outdoor fabrics they don't get any better than Sunbrella. Here's why.

    Untitled design (13)

One of the greatest features of the Sunbrella product is the UV resistance and colourfastness. This comes from a sophisticated manufacturing method that locks in the colour.

Even before the fabric or even the yarn used to weave into that fabric exists the colour is embedded. UV resistant pigments are mixed with the raw material that is developed into a fiber. This fiber is then worked into a yarn ready for weaving.

The colouring is therefore part of the base fiber, not simply a dye applied to a finished fabric. It is essentially part of the fabric's DNA. This makes it highly resistant to fading, colourfast and perfectly consistent.

In practical terms this gives you a product that will hold its colour looking great for years. When it comes to cleaning it means that you can easily spot clean to maintain the look and avoid having to remove covers for a deep clean.

The embedded colour is also the reason you can even use a bleach mixture when cleaning the finished product  without impacting on the colour. Many stains can be simply cleaned with nothing more than soap and water.

See the Sunbrella cleaning guide below for more information on caring for your Sunbrella outdoor fabrics.

We offer an extensive range of Sunbrella covered options in modular lounges, sofa sets and daybeds.

Visit our online store for these sets and more that feature Sunbrella.

    General or Light Cleaning

    1. Brush off any loose dirt.
    2. Prepare a cleaning solution of 1/4 cup mild soap, such as dishwashing liquid, per 4 litres of lukewarm water.
    3. Use a sponge or a soft bristle brush to clean
    4. Allow cleaning solution to soak into fabric.
    5. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
    6. Allow fabric to air dry.

    Spot Cleaning

    1. Apply a light mist of mild soap and water using a spray bottle.
    2. Work the solution into the stain by lightly scrubbing the area with a sponge or very soft bristle brush.
    3. For oil-based stains, an absorbent such as corn starch can be immediately applied directly to the stain for a period of 10 minutes and the excess removed using a straight edge. This aids in the removal process of the stain and prevents it from being pressed into the fabric.
    4. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
    5. Blot excess moisture with a clean, soft towel or sponge.
    6. Wet-vacuum or blot excess water.
    7. Air dry. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until all soap residue is removed.

Note: Seam to seam cleaning in combination with an extractor may be required in order to avoid water rings/stains.

    For Removable Sunbrella Fabric

    Hand washing

    1. Soak fabric in a solution of 1/4 cup mild soap 4 litres of lukewarm water.
    2. Use a sponge or a soft bristle brush as necessary.
    3. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
    4. Air dry.

    Machine washing

Machine wash in cold water. Depending on wash load size, use normal amounts of mild laundry detergent and add 1 cup of bleach. Allow fabric to air dry. Be sure any zippered casings are closed prior to machine washing.

Heavy Cleaning for Stubborn/Set-in Stains and Mildew

Sunbrella fabrics do not promote mildew growth, however, mildew may grow on dirt and other foreign substances that are not removed from the fabric.

    To clean stubborn stains:

    1. Prepare a solution of 1 cup of bleach and 1/4 cup mild soap per 4 litres of water.
    2. Spray on entire area and allow to soak into the fabric for 15 minutes.
    3. Blot stubborn/set in stains with a sponge, clean towel or very soft bristle brush.
    4. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
    5. Allow fabric to air dry.
    6. For severe mold/mildew growth, bleach quantities may be increased. See our stain chart for removal of specific stains.

View the Sunbrella fabric Stain chart here  noting that 1 gallon is around 3.8 litres

Re-treating the fabric for ease of cleaning

As part of the finishing process, Sunbrella fabrics are treated with a fluorocarbon finish, which enhances water repellency. This finish is designed to last for several years, but must be replenished after a thorough cleaning. Based on test results, makers of Sunbrella, Glen Raven® recommend a product called 303® Fabric Guard™ as the preferred re-treatment product.. Fabrics should be re-treated after thorough cleaning or as needed.

    Applying 303 Fabric Guard

303 should be applied to Sunbrella fabrics after each thorough cleaning, which typically removes the original finish and reduces the fabric’s water repellency.

    1. Clean Sunbrella fabric, using one of the cleaning methods.
    2. Allow Sunbrella to completely air dry.
    3. Apply 303 Fabric Guard in a well-ventilated area following instructions on the container.
    4. Apply 303 in a thin, even coat and allow fabric to dry completely.
    5. Apply a second thin, even coating of 303. (Two light coatings are more effective in restoring fabric water resistance than a single heavy coating.)

    Helpful hints

Protect the area around your Sunbrella fabric when using a bleach solution – bleach may discolor non-Sunbrella fabrics. Always rinse Sunbrella thoroughly to completely remove bleach.

Please be aware of the environment when cleaning with bleach. Bleach can have harmful effects on the natural environment around you. We do not advise using bleach if you are surrounded by a body of water or other environment that could be affected.

Sunbrella should only be allowed to air dry.

If fabric has some wrinkling, use an iron, if necessary, but only on the synthetic setting. As some irons exceed the recommended temperature on the synthetic setting, test a small inconspicuous area before ironing entire piece.

  • Outdoor aluminium tables

Ramada Moonscape Dining Chair & Venice Table 9pc Mandy Mooloolaba

When it comes to furniture materials suitable for extended life in the Australian outdoors it is hard to go past aluminium. It is a very light and will not rust which makes perfect for any number of applications.

We range hundreds of lounge, dining and daybed outdoor furniture pieces that all feature aluminium extensively in their construction. Even when you can't see it, it is still vital for us to use aluminium to ensure your piece will be suitable in an all weather environment.

Tables in particular are perhaps the most susceptible pieces of outdoor furniture in an external enviroment given their large, flat surface area. So we set about to develop a table that looked great but harnessed the benefits of aluminium so we would have a real outdoor performer.

View the most popular combinations of aluminium table settings here

Working with Royalle Outdoor Furniture we have come up with a 100% aluminium table. With the use of advanced painting techniques we have achieved a genuine whitewashed timber look. We have selected the specialist outdoor paint from US manufacturers Serwin Williams to achieve this unique look.

    Vogue 165x90cm

The Venice tables use a mixture of extruded panels expertly welded to form a one-piece table top, Our sub frame includes a classic cross leg design with an attractive cast aluminium foot for some lovely detail. To ensure the table remains 100% suitable for use in an outdoor environment stainless steel bolts are used to secure the frame to the tabletop.

The advantages of a 100% aluminium table

    1. It will not rust - Even when left in the elements there is no fear of structural deterioration from this material due to rust meaning they are a great option in an exposed area. These are particularly handy in coastal areas that experience the corrosive effects of salt spray.

    2. It will not rot, split or peel - Timber is a popular option with outdoor tables but some timbers are just not up to the job and with extensive weathering can show all these signs of stress.

    3. Lightweight yet strong - Aluminium is renowned for it's strength to weight ratio. Even when using a commercial gauge aluminium we still have a reasonably lightweight but very solid table. This makes it easy to move around, very handy for cleaning your outdoor surfaces or changing positions.

    4. Easy care, low maintenance - Just wipe it down, blower vac it or hose it, whatever you like. Unlike many outdoor tables there are no sealants or oils necessary to keep this protected and cleaning is as easy as it comes.

    5. UV Resistant - Unlike some other natural materials and synthetics the sun will not deteriorate aluminium.

    6. Mix and Match - You can achieve some very different but equally beautiful looks with these tables depending on your chair selection. There is the matching "Venice" cast aluminium chair with the same whitewash finish. Or choose from our all weather wicker chair. Try the matching Oston chair or go for something in our very popular "Moonscape" colourway.

Essentially as far as all weather options go you really can do no better. With the look of weathered timber but the performance and low maintenance benefits of aluminium these tables really deliver the ideal outdoor dining option for Australian backyards.

  • Natural Stone Tables

Bring the beauty and unique character of natural stone to your outdoor dining experience. A natural stone outdoor dining table is a fantastic option for almost every type of outdoor space. Natural stone tables will compliment and enhance both timber and paved outdoor dining areas. See the gallery below for inspiration. By utilising the same materials as used for centuries in some of the world's greatest buildings means that these pieces of outdoor furniture are built to last.

Pinot-Milano 7pc Stone Dining Ron & Kerry Pelican Waters 4

We predominantly range tables using two different primary stones. Marble and travertine.  Both are forms of limestone, occur naturally and are used extensively as premium building materials.

How are natural stone outdoor tables made?

A solid slab of travertine or marble would be unmanagable for a piece of putdoor furniture so the tables are actually a combination of materials.

The stone is cut into tiles which are expertly hand laid on to a reinforced solid resin base. This provides the strength needed to support the table top while keeping the weight down. Most importantly, with the aid of a groutless join a beautiful natural stone surface is achieved.

Being completely natural, every stone piece is different and will have it's own unique hue or a streak of colour. Given it's origins from hotsprings,  a travertine stone in particular can also feature tiny holes. It is part of it's natural character. To provide a silky smooth surface for these tables the holes are filled with resin and the top is finished with a protective sealant.

Advantages of a Natural Stone table

      • A stone top, solid fibreglass and resin base and added aluminium bracing produce a strong and durable product
      • The aluminium sub frame will not rust or damage the table through expansion (note: only some brands use aluminium)
      • The table top will remain cooler than some other materials
      • Low maintenance and suitable for an all weather enviroment
      • Will not warp or bow like some other tables
      • The neutral colours will pair nicely with a variety of chair styles, materials and colours to suit your preference and environment

    Available styles

We have a number of options available and highly recommend the tables from Royalle Outdoor Furniture. Importantly the reinforced frame for the Royalle models is made from aluminium where other brands can use steel. This is extremely important as a steel frame is known to expand and damage the tiles of the table.

These are the main styles available. Check our online store for the current size options. There are plenty of options available for eight and ten seaters and some smaller.

The Rositano: Travertine top with a marble border and sitting on an aluminium frame with a space to store your cushions

The Verona: The Verona's travertine top is bordered with a subtle caramel border. This looks great with a lighter coloured all weather wicker chair. Sitting on the aluminium pedestal base.

The Milano: The light travertine is bordered with a dark marble. This suits a cast aluminium chair or a dark wicker. Using the aluminium pedestal base.

Old Moon: Using just a dark stone this table offers quite a different look and works beautifully with darker wicker chairs or a cast aluminium option. On the aluminium pedestal base.

    Selecting a chair

As we sell all of these items separately you have a number of options to choose from with chairs. These tables will go well with cast aluminium or many of our huge range of synthetic wicker chairs.

For great comfort an all weather wicker chair can be used with any of these styles. If you are looking to add a matching outdoor lounge this is a great option. Here are a few examples.

Or for an undoubtedly elegant look go for a cast aluminium. These chairs are also great performers in an exposed environment.

Natural stone tables in Australian backyards

These settings have boomed in popularity in recent years. As popular by the coast for their resistance to the salt air as they are in the surburbs or on the farm. Here are a few examples of how these tables are being used in Australian backyards.

    Care and Maintenance

For day to day cleaning use a mild detergent with water.

We also recommend sealing your table to maintain a protective coating and prevent staining. If your table is in a full sun position we would recommend every six months. If in a covered location seal once a year.

We recommend Sureseal sealant for your stone table

  • Outdoor Dining with Teak

Teak is one of the world's best timbers for construction. It is indelibly strong, durable, weatherproof and has outstanding resistance to decay and rot. So it is perfect for outdoor furniture.

    Jessica-Lincoln Recycled Teak 9pc Dining Sue & Brian (5)

When teak furniture pieces are produced they are generally oiled. Left to weather, the timber will naturally turn a silvery grey but a clean and re-oiling will bring it back to original state.

There are a number of products used to achieve this but we have looked to an eco-friendly option that will perform in the outdoors and with a touch of colour produces a stunning vintage look.

Our whitewashed collection of teak outdoor furniture is treated with a coloured oil compound called Rubio Monocoat.

Browse our most popular teak settings in our online store here

The result is a lovely matt finish, smokey white in colour and with the protection of a high quality oil that uses nanotechnology to provide a durable molecular bond with the timber. Here are some of the reasons why we choose Rubio Monocoat..

Eco Friendly – Monocoat is completely plant based and 100% free of VOC’s  (volatile organic compounds)

UV resistant – High protection against UV to maintain the look in a sunny environment for longer

Liquid resistant – The oil provides liquid resistance to the furniture giving the timber itself protection against water and spills

Mould resistant – in the right conditions mould can form on the dirt and grime present on any surface. Outdoor furniture, particularly when kept out of the sun is particularly susceptible to it. Inhibitors in this coating will help. Please note it does not make it impervious.

No flaking – The bonded coating does not form a film so will not flake or crack
